History
Villa La Palagina is a splendid 16th century villa which combines its old beauty with the sobriety and elegance of a modern construction. Positioned in a beautiful part of the Chianti Classico region, immersed in a park of century - old plants, it enables tourists to see how things were in times gone by - a relaxing environment amid breathtaking panoramic views. Ages ago where now stands Villa La Palagina there used to be a convent of Vallombrosan nuns. We don't have many records of this convent because it seems to have been destroyed by an earthquake. From the rubble Villa La Palagina was built.
As time passed the villa was owned by the family of Bettino Ricasoli, a baron who owned several castles and properties in the Valdarno area.
Evidence of this can still be seen - the iron initials B and R are still on one door of the villa. Just to remember, Bettino Ricasoli was twice the head of the government of the Kingdom of Italy. For many consecutive years he was the Mayor of Gaiole and a promoter for the constitution of the Agricultural Co-operative of Chianti Classico.
Restaurant
Restaurant offers Tuscan cuisine and wines. It is housed in the old cellars of the villa, where a traditional Tuscan rustic style harmonises with the elegance of art nouveau. It is divided into three smaller areas where each table is guaranteed privacy by its discreet location among sculptures in chocolate and sugar.

We stayed here in the winter off season and were the only guests in this beautiful villa. Staff, I imagine was much more limited but they took care of us beautifully - including setting up a breakfast buffet and also cooking other dishes to our satisfaction in the restaurant that was closed for the season. Wines, olive oil and mushrooms are sold at bargain prices. I back of the villa is a parklike setting of evergreens, plus covered private parking. Looking from your room or suite you have the most beautiful view of the winding hills and road. Upon entering the villa at night upon return from a daytime excursion, using our key at the huge tall doors, we felt like we were entering our own private little castle. It was awesome. It's in a very private location with a groundskeeper/security home at the entry gates to the villa. The two pools were beautiful. We could only imagine how beautiful and green the vineyards and olive trees would be in the summertime. As far as weddings, they have facilities for those also or for parties. Couldn't imagine a more beautiful yet relaxed atmosphere to celebrate special occasions and honeymoons. Their chef offers cooking classes in the summer. Enjoyed the people and the friendliness of the village closeby of Figline. All in all, we'd certainly return to stay there. Enjoy, Enjoy!

We stayed for 4 nights at Villa La Palagina for our honeymoon in September 2006. I really cannot recommend it highly enough! We booked a Junior suite which was very well priced, and absolutely beautiful! There are 2 amazing swimming pools, and a fabulous restaurant. We had planned to use it as a quiet base, and eat out every night, but the food was so perfect we ate there for 3 out of the 4 nights. If you are looking for a relaxing retreat in the heart of Tuscany, with lots of interesting places nearby it is a great choice.( Siena, Florence all within an hours drive approx) Perfect for honeymooners, in fact it is also a lovely wedding venue ( there was a wedding reception there while we stayed) Transport is essential We would be very happy to go back!
