Finding a charming place to stay in Tuscany has long posed a choice between a castle in the countryside or a hotel in a historic city. But to get closer to the fruits of the Tuscan earth, a visitor can now head straight to the farm. Agriturismo lodgings — long popular among Italian vacationers — are adding luxury accommodations and attracting upscale foreign visitors. Some of the best of these establishments can be found on the winding road between Arezzo and Siena, in a slice of the Chianti region that has been turning out fine wine and olive oil for centuries. Though individual rooms for couples are available, accommodations are geared more toward families or groups of friends. Apartments are available to sleep four to 20 people. Tenuta Lupinari is a lovely place to have a quiet, scenic vacation in the middle of the Chianti area. We stayed for a week with two children (10 and 5) and my parents in Il Limonaia. The pool area is beautiful, and it was so hot that week that we really needed the it. The kids spent the whole week trying to catch lizards. We took day trips to other towns in the area, but didn't go as far as we had planned. The roads are so curvy that it took longer to get places than we had anticipated. But, we were happy with the trips we took, and always happy to get home in the late afternoon to relax at the pool. We enjoyed cooking for ourselves, and exploring the offerings in the nearby markets. We ate one night in the restaurant. We went for a walk each evening through the property, sometimes with the friendly dogs that live there.

Tenuta Lupinari was magical. Spent a week there with my wife in October. Not much to add. I agree with all other reviews. Requires a car. Easy train ride to visit Firenze for the day. Visited a different hilltown each day. Check out the hot springs in Terme Rapolano (San Giovanni Terme) for something different. Dining everywhere was great. We found Rick Steves book to be the best guide for finding things.

My wife and I spent one week searching the Chianti area for the perfect location for a friends and family stay in Italy and we absolutely found it here at Lupinari. While the property is stunning, it was the service from Marianna, Antonella and their entire family (including the dogs) that made our stay so memorable. Other than the service, the villas are all slightly unique and provide different layouts and amenities that suited everyone. Overall, we expect the best when we travel and we certainly found it at Lupinari.

We have just returned from a most fabulous holiday in the hills of Tuscany. We wanted to plan something special for our 10th anniversary and a very particular friend forwarded the website for this inn to us. I knew immediately that Tenuta Lupinari was what we were looking for. This is an ancient Tuscan estate owned by a lovely family who currently run the inn. Their home, an actual castle, is right on the 750 acre property. You will need a rental car to get around as the property is very secluded. You must drive through small towns and country roads, at the end of a driveway lined with cypress trees, the castle appears. The gardens are immaculate. Hedges of lavendar line the path to the pool. Fig and olive trees are all around. The air smells heavenly. The inn offers several apartments for its guests, all furnished with lovely Italian country antiques. I would highly recommend this resort for a romantic holiday or for a family vacation. I would highly recommend this resort.
