Poggio Ugo is beautifully situated in the countryside in a private location. It is four kilometers from the nearest little town called Bucine. You have to drive to get groceries in Bucine. I am not so sure about the closest restaurants, because the owners cooked a very nice meal three times during the week that the guests could join for a reasonable cost. The other days we cooked ourselves, since the kitchen was well equipped and we had a very nice outside area in which to enjoy the meal. The main house is the original old farmhouse which the owners very proudly have restored (they have two binders with pictures you can look at). During the restoration they found a real stone oven in which Roberto bakes fantastic pizzas for the guests. The other two houses are old barns refurbished and all in excellent shape. The one we lived in consists of two apartments, both with a beautiful outside areas under roof, where we had all our private meals.
The dinners with the other guests was served outside on a long table close to the stone oven in the main building.
I think there are six or seven apartments in total. We had a very nice private outside sitting area. There was a very nice and clean pool with lots of toys for the children.
A small separate area of the pool was for the really small children. Loads of sun beds around the pool.
You can play table football and table tennis and if you are interested Roberto arranges a football match with the guest during one or two evenings. All the furniture was in excellent shape and very comfortable. The house was fresh and clean and furnished in a typical Tuscan style.
There was enough seating for everybody. The bedrooms are very, very nice and the furniture is beautiful and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and fresh with toilette and a shower.
The kitchen is in very good shape and we had enough cooking utensils. I brought my mixing rod so I could make the best cappuccino in the mornings.
The frying pan can be a little round in the bottom, but that comes with the gas stove, which is excellent to cook on. I enjoy cooking a lot and made full meals for the family. I brought my own spices. I cannot remember any bad experiences what so ever, but plenty of good ones.
The owners Roberto and Paula are truly lovely people who really enjoy having guests and do their absolute best to make you feel at home. They love children and are loved back. The meals we had together were fantastic - lovely homemade pizzas or the fantastic barbeque, together with Paulas awesome homemade Tiramisu.
A lot of good wine, which you can get a the reception - just put you name and what you have taken for the evening and you pay for it when you leave. We have had two fantastic vacations there full with good memories. We have already signed up for returning next year! The owners speaks a little English, but more French or German.
I recommend this place with all my heart. I as I mentioned, we have booked for the next year already and I know several families who are coming back year after year.
In Tuscany there are plenty of things to do. Siena and Florence are a must, but Montepulciano, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montalcino are not far away. You can even go to Rome over the day, since the autostrada is not far way.
As I mentioned I cannot say much about the restaurants, since we did not try them.
